Our Summer 2015 Projects

Here is a list of projects we are currently working on this summer. Call us if you are interested in volunteer oppurtunities.

Project 1: Removal of Water Lettuce

After the recent rain events, water lettuce has been taking over certain areas of Spring Lake. This harmful invasive can damage Texas Wild Rice and other native vegetation by blocking sunlight. It promotes the growth of algae that is hamful to native vegetation and other wildlife. We will be going to these areas of Spring Lake once a week to remove the water lettuce. This is a project that will be ongoing until the water lettuce is removed.

Project 2: Planting Native Vegetation

After the removal of invasive vegetation we must fill in the cleared space with native plants. This is important because if the space is left open invasive species will most likely just grow back. This summer we will be working on establishing Texas Wild Rice near the bridge at Rio Vista Park, and at City Park. These areas require us to scuba dive, so please be cautious of divers when tubing in these areas.

Project 3: Fine Sediment Removal

We will be using a dredge system to remove fine sediment at the Purgatory Creek confluence. Fine sediment prevents proper flow of the river, and will continue to build up if it is not removed. We will be using scuba divers as well as a large dredge system in this area. Please be cautious when tubing through the area when the crew is present.
